About

I'm Lou. I'm A Small Business Owner Too.

I've spent more than 20 years working with websites, search, SEO and online marketing. I also run a small business, which means I know what it feels like to look at an invoice for something and wonder whether it did anything at all.

That's the main reason I work the way I do. I'm on the same side of the table as you. When you spend money and it doesn't produce anything, that's not a line item to me, it's the same sting I'd feel.

I started CompellingServices because I genuinely like solving business problems. The tools are interesting, but the part I enjoy is the puzzle: figuring out why something isn't working when the owner is clearly good at what they do.

Sometimes the answer is a website. Sometimes it's working out why you don't show up on Google. Sometimes it's using AI or automation to take hours of repetitive work off your week. And sometimes you just need someone outside the business to ask a few honest questions.

Technology changes. Good business questions don't.

The tools have changed constantly over 20 years. Directories, then search engines, then social media, then reviews, then Google Business Profile, and now AI assistants answering questions people used to type into a search box.

What hasn't changed is what actually decides whether a local business does well. It still comes back to the same handful of questions:

  • 1How do customers find you?
  • 2Why should they choose you?
  • 3What are you spending money on?
  • 4What's wasting your time?
  • 5What could work better?

Answer those honestly and the right tools become fairly obvious. Skip them and you end up buying whatever someone happened to be selling that month.

I'm not trying to build the biggest agency in Wilmington.

I work with a limited number of local businesses on purpose. A bigger client list would mean less attention per business, more account managers, and eventually the kind of relationship where nobody remembers what you're trying to build.

I'd rather know your business well enough to notice when something's off, be reachable when something breaks, and stick around long enough to see whether the advice worked.

Leland is home

I'm based in Leland and most of the businesses I work with are within a reasonable drive, around Brunswick County and Wilmington. That's not a marketing angle, it's just where I live and where I want to spend my time.

Time matters to me. Family time, evenings, weekends. That shapes how I think about your business too. More revenue is good. Getting your evenings back is also good. The goal is a business that works better for you, not just a bigger one.

What you can expect from me

Straight answers, including the ones that cost me work. If something isn't worth spending money on right now, I'll tell you, and I'd rather be the person you call in three years than the person who sold you one thing you didn't need.

Local, for real

Based in Leland. I know this area and the people in it.

A short client list

On purpose. So I can actually pay attention to your business.

Problem first

We find the cause before anyone spends money on a fix.

Straight answers

If you don't need something, I'll tell you that.

Where to go next

Tell me about your business

You don't need to know what service you need. Just tell me what's going on and I'll tell you what I think.

No pressure

Let's talk about what's going on.

Tell me what's bothering you about the business. If I can help, I'll tell you how. If I can't, I'll tell you that too.
